Army Tanks Pass Through Downtown Raleigh

No, that wasn’t your imagination. Around seven tanks were seen passing through downtown Raleigh.

Although some folks looking out their office windows off of Glenwood Avenue, Hillsborough Street, or other downtown locations may have thought they were being invaded, there was a simple explanation for the military vehicles’ presence.

The recent “parade” of at least seven tanks were seen passing through town as part of a Norfolk Southern trainload of military vehicles.

The flat rail cars contained two M1 Abrams tanks each and there were also several railroad cars with military trucks and other vehicles on them.

Heavy vehicles such as tanks are often transported by rail, since trains are capable of carrying heavier loads.

The $4 million tanks weigh over 67 tons each.
